Summer Term 2026

Welcome back! We hope you all enjoyed the Easter break! This letter will give you an insight into all the interesting learning that will be occurring in Chestnut class during the Summer term.

Just a reminder that our PE days are Monday and Fridays.

Homework will be given out on a Friday and will be expected back by the following Wednesday morning.

This term our theme is ‘What did the Ancient Greeks do for us?' and in history, we will be researching the Ancient Greek civilisation, studying many different Greek gods, beliefs and exploring the Olympic games.

In English, we are looking at STEM through ‘Rosie Revere Engineer’ and writing job adverts for an engineer. We will also be reading ‘Odysseus’ and learning about the adventures of the legendary Greek king.

In reading, we will continue to focus on comprehension of texts weekly, looking at Vocabulary, Inference, Prediction, Explanation, Retrieval and Summarising (VIPERS). We will be focusing on a different reading skill each week and will have two reading lessons, looking at how to put each skill into context, as well as practising a variety of different exam-style questions.

Spelling, punctuation and grammar will be taught, which will then be linked to our theme and the English lessons, where children can use their learning in context. We will be using dictation during our spelling tests on a Friday, which encourage the children to write full sentences with their spelling words in.

We will be looking at a different group of spellings each week that follow the National Curriculum and these will be on the homework for the children to practise.

In maths, we are going to be continuing our work on decimals – multiplying by 10,100 and 1000, as well as multiplying decimals by integers. We will then work on fractions, decimals and percentages. Heading further into the term, we will be completing work on shape and ratio.

In R.E, we are looking at Christianity and our big question is ‘Should believing in the resurrection change how Christians view life and death?’ We will explore the term ‘resurrection’ and focus on the importance of the Easter celebration. We will also be looking at the term ‘Hallelujah’ and how this is used through music.

In science, we are learning all about Earth and Space. I am very much looking forward to exploring the recent expedition of the Artemis II and using the children’s prior knowledge to research our solar system further.

On a final note, I would just like to wish Year 6 the best of luck in their upcoming SATs. The children have been working incredibly hard and I know they will make us proud by trying their absolute best.

If there are any questions, please feel free to ask after school.

Thank you,

Miss Coote (Class Teacher)
